Tips de mis Viajes y Salidas: Tikal, Pirámides... →

Spanish they didn't teach you in class. →
A random list of random bits of Spanish knowledge I’ve acquired in my time here. Some are strickly Guatemalan, or Chapinismos. Inappropriate Chapinismos aren’t included. ;)
“No hay nada” - Double negatives for the win. Literally translated means “There isn’t nothing.” Really means “There isn’t any.”
“Fijate que” - A starter phrase. Basically like “It seems that…” Literally fijar translates as...

Archaeological News: Maya Royal Tombs Found With... →
A woman ruler’s skeleton—her head mysteriously placed between two bowls—is one of two royal burials recently found at the Maya ruins of Nakum in Guatemala.
The roughly 2,000-year-old tomb was found underneath another, 1,300-year-old tomb filled with treasures such as jade gorgets—normally used to protect the throat—beads, and ceremonial knives.
The upper tomb’s corpse had been...

Hey! Today is... Bottle School →
Something we think it’s garbage, while they think it’s treasure.
A school built by the plastic bottle in Guatemala. Kids collects bottle and build it with their own hand.
They build the school with sth you and I think that is useless and impossible. Which is easily found in trash — plastic bottle and chicken wire, with the concrete as a pedestal to uphold.
A school costs less than...

The largest quake, with a 5.8 magnitude, hit at 12:34 p.m., with two of 4.8 magnitude hitting before and after. All were centered in the same area about 30 miles southeast of the capital, Guatemala City.

Racial Resentment Sucks →
You know, sometimes racial shit can harm one. Even if you fight racism, people is always going to see you like “that fucking white kid”. Yeah, I’m talking about racism in Guatemala. Last day, a girl wrote about her true right of being guatemalan. I won’t fight that, indigenous people got here before. But it sucked when, well, she told me Guate was not my “homeland”. She told me she was not going...

For those of you living in Guatemala, who see the signs everywhere on the streets, do you ever stop to wonder “Where does all that money come from?”
With the fourth highest rate of child malnutrition in the world… who can afford to spend $50 million on campaigns? Hmmmmm…
Drug money has also…

joannaengagingart: Guatemala →
My mom and I wanted to take a special trip this year. She was retiring this fall, and I was celebrating a significant birthday. After pondering different options, we settled on Guatemala. Neither of us had been there before, and people kept telling us that it was a beautiful country.
In order to prepare our itinerary (I am known an obsessive trip planner), I interviewed people who had lived or...
